Important Travel Information

TRAVELLING TO PONTA DO OURO AND MOZAMBIQUE:

When Travelling to Mozambique or Ponta do Ouro, make sure you plan it carefully so that you do not miss out on the border times. The Kozi Bay Border Post opens at 07H30 and closes 17H30. The earlier you get there, the better, so that you can avoid as much traffic / congestions and waiting as possible, especially during the holiday seasons (December Holidays and Easter Holidays), where Hundreds of cars are lining up to enter Mozambique.

There is a Spar in Kozi Bay for last minute shopping. (Note: the Spar is not open on a Sundays!) It is recommended that you buy meat and most of your food supplies here in South Africa, before entering Mozambique.

Fuelling up before Kozi Bay is also important as fuel prices are higher in Kozi Bay and in Mozambique.

4x4's are needed to get to Ponta do Ouro FROM the Kozi Bay border. Although, if you are travelling with a normal sedan vehicle, you can park your car off on the South African side of the border in a secure parking area for only R25.00 - R35.00 per day (Rate is subject to change). The parking area has fencing and has 24 hour security. Offload your luggage and for a small fee, a 4x4 will lift you from the border to Ponta do Ouro. Approximately a 12km drive. If you have a 4x4 (please see "BORDER, PASSPORT AND INSURANCE FEES" below), then deflate your tire pressure down to 1.4 and enjoy the scenic 4x4 road heading to Ponta do Ouro.

BORDER, PASSPORT AND INSURANCE FEES:

  • R15.00 border tax per individual
  • R20 temporary import permit per car
  • R140 3rd party insurance per car (a fee you can save if you bring your 'full comprehensive insurance cover papers')
  • R80.00 for an Import licence if you are towing a trailer or boat (Make sure you use the red triangle!)
  • Please ensure you take your vehicle registration papers with you.

Detailed directions on how to get to Ponta do Ouro

DIRECTIONS FROM DURBAN TO KOSI BAY BORDER:

From Durban, Travel North along the N2 highway, past Richards Bay, Mtubatuba and St Lucia Turn-off. Approximately 50km from the St Lucia turn-off, turn right onto the R22, (into and past Hluhluwe) for approximately 130km where you will reach a t-junction (R22 ends). Turn right and follow this road for approximately 40km where you will eventually reach the Kosi bay Border.

DIRECTIONS FROM DURBAN TO KOSI BAY BORDER (scenic route):

From Durban, Travel North along the N2 highway, past Richards Bay, Mtubatuba, St Lucia turn-off & Mkuze turn-off. Turn right off the N2 Highway, 10km past the Mkuze turn-off (look out for signs going to Jozini Dam Wall). Follow the road for about 600m and turn right where you will travel approximately 1km where you will turn left towards Jozini Dam Wall. Travel through the scenic mountain pass which overlooks the Jozini Dam. Continue travelling on this road (don't turn right into D1832 road) until you go through the town of Jozini where you must keep left which will take you over the Jozini Dam Wall. Once you go over the Dam Wall, continue to travel straight (don't turn right into the D1836 road). Follow this road until you reach a T-junction. Turn Right and travel for approximately 73km where you will eventually reach the Kosi bay Border.

DIRECTIONS FROM DURBAN TO PONTA DO OURO DISTANCE:

Distance from Durban to Mozambique border at Ponta do Ouro / Kozi Bay is approx. 460km (4-5 hour journey - all depending on weather, road constructions and conditions etc.)

DIRECTIONS FROM JOHANNESBURG TO KOSI BAY BORDER (scenic route):

The best route is to go along the N17 to Bethal and Ermelo > onto the N2 past Piet Retief > past Pongola > Turn left just after the Pongolapoort / Jozini Dam off the N2 highway > Drive though the mountain pass and over the Jozini Dam wall > Follow signs to 'Kozi Bay' and 'Border Post'. Stop over at Manguzi, where you can fill up with petrol and get basic supplies.

DIRECTIONS FROM JOHANNESBURG TO PONTA DO OURO DISTANCE:

Distance from Johannesburg to Mozambique border at Ponta do Ouro / Kozi Bay is approx. 630km (5-6 hour journey - all depending on weather, road constructions and conditions etc.)
